Home Findings Well-Being Summit
Nearly 150 Senior Healthcare and Employer Executives, Community Leaders Gather to Advance Well-Being Cause
During his introduction of Wellmark, Group Vice President Peter Roberts, one of the 20 featured speakers at Healthways annual Well-Being Summit in Washington, D.C., Healthways CEO Ben Leedle summed up the goal of the landmark event by saying, "We are creating a new institution of data, something that hasn't existed before. We want to invite the rest of the world to dig into this with us, to find new insights and create new understandings. This isn't just a matter of reporting findings. It's about understanding the causes and effects, the dependencies and interdependencies, associated with the way we live our lives in order to help people improve their wellbeing."
Over the course of the two day Summit, the nearly 150
attendees from across the nation certainly did a lot of
digging and questioning. The engaged audience of
senior healthcare and business professionals heard from
many of the world's top experts and thinkers on the
topics of well-being and population engagement.
Day one commenced with a keynote presentation by Dr. Michael Roizen, chief wellness officer and chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute and cofounder and chair of the RealAge Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Roizen shared his perspective on bringing a culture of health and wellness to the workplace by improving personal well-being in body and mind. Other first day speakers included USA Today Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page, who led a panel discussion of Well-Being in the media featuring representatives from Reuters and the Wall Street Journal.
Gallup President Jim Clifton, Gallup Chief Scientist Jim Harter and Healthways Lead Well-Being Researcher Amy Neftzger provided an overview of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, and IdeaCity chairman and CEO Roy Spence discussed the importance of incorporating purpose into business goals and practices. Andrew Gold, executive director of global benefit planning at Pitney Bowes, closed out the day with a comprehensive overview of the culture of health at one of the world's best-recognized technology companies.
Day two featured sessions with Joseph Coughlin, Ph.D., the founder and director of the MIT AgeLab, and senior executives Tracey Moorhead, Michael Taylor, M.D., Jackie Austad and Claire Sharda with DMAA, Caterpillar Corporation, Union Pacific and Merck, respectively. Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine and Howard County, MA Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Phyllis Madachy discussed the use of the Well-Being Index and associated concepts in their communities. Finally, the audience heard from John Haugen, vice president of health and wellness at General Mills, who brought along a special guest, Ali Vincent, the winner of NBC's Biggest Loser reality show during season five.
The Summit presentations provided company leaders and policy makers with applicable best practices and Well-Being Index measures to better understand the well-being of their unique populations and make more informed decisions to improve health programs and benefits, work environment and health culture.
